Thanks for asking me to answer this question. So far I haven’t seen anyone really accurately answer this question.
Here’s how an online aviation college works if you want to be a pilot:
1.) You take your flying lessons from a FBO in your area that offers an online college program (which is fairly common and easy to find these days).
2.) While you fly and get your license & ratings, you take online courses for an aviation degree. Courses include aviation systems, aviation weather, aviation law, national aerospace system and may even go into aviation management.
3.) Once you graduate the course and receive your four year degree (usually it’s a Flight Officer degree or Aviation Management degree) you should also be done with you flying and hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate or higher, with many finishing at the CFI level.
I currently hold a Private Pilot certificate and am “getting back into the game”. I fly out of an FBO that is associated with an online college course and offers complete accelerated ground school for private, instrument, commercial and CFI ratings. I’m hoping to make a career change in about a year and take advantage of the huge demand for pilots right now—I hope it pays off.
