Dry ice is produced commercially using several different methods:
It's a byproduct of ammonia production from nitrogen
It can be produced from natural gas (methane)
It can be the result of large scale fermentation
Using it in the manner that you have described could be considered as being non-cyclic refrigeration and it very commonly used.
