Dry ice is produced commercially using several different methods:

  • It's a byproduct of ammonia production from nitrogen
  • It can be produced from natural gas (methane)
  • It can be the result of large scale fermentation

Using it in the manner that you have described could be considered as being non-cyclic refrigeration and it very commonly used.
