I stole some money from my parents, and I have to pay it back to them. But I currently have no money. What should I do?

I’m going to assume you are younger and aren’t able to commit to a typical job.

I made quite a bit of money in 2nd-8th grade running lemonade stands and walking dogs. The key was advertising. You can advertise many services such as lawn mowing, snow shoveling (depending on where you live,) leaf raking, house cleaning, laundry services, babysitting, car washing, tutoring if you have a certain strong suit or skill (academia, sports, music,) house sitting, pet sitting, etc. If you’re able and have a little bit of start up money, you may also be able to offer a simple product, like baked goods, something artistic,.. there are very easy-to-follow tutorials on Youtube for creating some surprisingly simple scarves and whatnot.

Once you’ve decided which business options are viable for you, start getting the word out! You can easily print hundreds of business cards at home or at school and place them in your neighbors mailboxes advertising your services. Setting up a website to list on your business cards shows your potential clients the seriousness of your endeavor, and there are many free, easy website creating tools out there. Simply google free website and go from there. You can list all the services you offer, prices, and, once you start having clients, you and list positive reviews others have left you. Don’t list your personal address or provide any personal photos, but do provide a phone number or email at which a client can reach you. Post flyers at local parks, local stores with bulletin boards, and your school (where permitted.) Spread the word on social media if you’re old enough to be using it. You can create a Facebook page to showcase your work (a pic of a happy dog your walking, or a photo of a pie you baked for a client.)

Don’t give up. Persistence is key. If at first your neighbors don’t respond to the first wave of business cards, return to their homes with a $1 off coupon off your services. Many adults want to support kids showing initiative, so keep on pressing and something will come through for you!
