Here are 3 agricultural subsitutes that can keep crops pest-free without conventional pesticides:

Biocontrol (aka: biological control) It's not as scary as it sounds, think of bio in terms of biology, and control as in management.

Polyculture (companion planting)

Natural Barriers & Predators.

I will tell you this much: it’s not GMO’s. That is what the big factory farms are all turning to. They have made the plants pesticide resistant, and the result of this is the advent of “Superweeds”.

This is a nightmare in the making, as the resistant weeds will multiply to the extent that the pesticides are useless. Their strategy is to then spray the crops with something else. Then there will be another wave of a different Superweed, and we will be digging ourselves into a hole. We need to work with nature, not against it. Nature will always win.

The best possible scenario would be if each person could have a hectare of land to grow their own organic produce. Companion planting and mulch would be the natural way to go about things, but it isn’t realistic.

Perhaps we will eventually come to have a multitude of small, organic farms to feed ourselves from. I don’t have all the answers, but someday in the near future I plan to buy a small acreage and do just that.
