NO2 is a noxious, reactive brown gas that can result from combustion of fuels containing N. It is also formed when concentrated nitric acid is used as an oxidizing agent. It is a radical, as a result of having 17 valence electrons, and will dimerize to form N2O4 in an equilibrium that gets more of the dimer as temperature decreases.
