Fresh mushrooms would make the texture of the sauce chunkier, and add visual interest, but mushrooms’ flavor is pretty subtle, so you likely would not get a lot of mushroom flavor. The tomato would simply overpower it.

Like all foods, mushrooms have nutritional value which is a benefit. And mushrooms meaty texture can substitute for some of the meat in the sauce, if you want to stretch your meat a bit.
