Magnifying glasses are necessary to, as the name suggests, magnify objects and let you examine anything in detail. They are made with convex lens that aids in magnification.
DO

They magnify an image so that it can be examined in more detail. They are typically a convex lens. They can be manufactured from glass or plastic. I suspect that they are casr, not ground. Although, there might be some very high quality examples that are ground, though I have never seen one.

Magnifying lens can also be used to concentrate sunlight, and thereby start a fire (or serve as a death ray over an ant hill).
