What is the meaning of every 16-inch marking on the measurements tape?

In the U.S., most building standards call for wall studs, especially 2 X 4’s (*) to be spaced at intervals of 16 inches-on-center. The tape marks at 16 inches facilitate such layout when the wall are being laid out. Note that the standard size or plywood sheets, plasterboard, chip wood panels, in the U.S. are standard 4 X 8 feet (48 X 96 inches) and coincide with the standard stud spacing with 3 vertical studs or with 6 studs on the horizontal.

(*) Note that 2 X 4’s, when finish planned are not a full 2 X 4 inches in cross-section, only the rough saw-cut are close to those dimension.
