Wood was used originally and possibly still is as lignum vitae for ship propeller shafts. Plastics such as delrin, PTFE, HDPE work well too. Some porous metals are used as bushings, bronze works and of course steel either with lubricants or in the form or roller and ball bearings. Ceramics can now be used in ball bearings too and you can even buy plastic versions.
