When making caramelized onions, is it better to use red, white, or yellow onions?

Yellow cooking onions, the hot when raw ones have the most sugar in them and thus caramelize the best and have the sweetest flavor. Red onions also will cook up sweet but because of their purple color will not brown when caramelized (they do brown but it looks different than with yellow or white onions). Sweet onions, IMO, are not worth caramelizing. They will not brown as readily and they will not have the sweet flavor that the reds and yellow cooking will have.
