The reason of using orange street lights can be of its luminosity. This is the sodium vapor lamp and the major thing with this is, there can be a clear visibility even at times of fog and mist penetration. The light gets radiated over larger distances.

These sodium vapor lamps causes less pollution than the mercury vapor lamp. Also that, Sodium vapor lamps are even economical for security lightning, but its  been limited to outdoor lightning.
