Why does the socket plug have five holes in it?

the reasons of 5 holes in the socket connectors is that may electronic connectors for computers and peripherals have unfilled pin positions. Existing plug sizes in the market can be the reason of these 5 holes. Sometime they just do this to create uniqueness in the socket.
